Sony, Rootkits and Digital Rights Management Gone Too Far

Mark's Sysinternals Blog: Sony, Rootkits and Digital Rights Management Gone Too Far

I bought two CDs from BMG records last week. I think those two will be the last Cd's I ever buy. This story from Mark Russinovich is a frightening example of corporate paranoia going too far. Their business model is, "Since our customers are criminals, we might as well be criminals too." Congratulations, Sony! You've destroyed the last bit of trust your customers had in you.

I can't wait to see the anti-trust and class action lawsuits arising out of this one. I wonder who made this genius decision? I think it was probably some exec with no idea or knoweldge of technology who got this suggestion, said "Hey, sounds good to me, that'll save us money from evil priate customers!" and is now on the line for hundreds of millions of dollars in lawsuits coming back the other way from pissed off people who now know why their computers stopped working, gut buggy, or became infected with spyware after playing a Sony CD.

Rarely do you get to see a major company go belly up from its own stupidity. Here's a case example writhing before us. Bye Sony, the world won't miss you.

CBC Calgary - Klein says prime minister should resign - Maybe he ought to have a look at himself first...

CBC Calgary - Klein says prime minister should resign

Hmm. Jean Chretien's gang of thugs waste 100 million dollars worth of taxpayers money. Ralph Klein wastes $1.4 BILLION passing out "prosperity cheques" as a blatant vote-buying exercise. Something about stones and glass houses. Whatever.

Throw the dirty bums out. The lot of 'em, everywhere.

Who should we vote for to lead Kamloops on November 19th?

Insta Marv

Instamarv thinks we ought to vote for Arjun. I think Arjun is well meaning and will provide an impassioned voice that is missing in the poltiical realm, and I think he really does care quite a bit about democracy and hearing the voice of the people. He may indeed be a good choice.

Who else? Tina Lange is another one who is worth watching. Entrepreneurial, driven, highly motivated, Tina has a lot of successes under her belt and will be a real force in council to move ahead with some badly needed projects. If she has a fault, its that she can be a little too focused in on things - but this is a common challenge that can be overcome with good people on staff.

The mayor situation. Hmm. I haven't a clue. Hopefully the next few weeks will see some more discussion on what each candidate stands for and how they'll get things done.
