Reports

The following reports are the written components of projects undertaken for various clients. A more comprehensive listing of reports and academic papers can be found within the research section of this website.

Client: Louise O'Sullivan Boyne - Councillor, City of Montreal

Studio III: Economic Revitalization of Ste. Catherine Street - This is the powerpoint presentation of the report given to Mrs. O'Sullivan Boyne on a revitalization plan for Ste. Catherine Street. This report covers creation of a business improvement district, streetscape and facade improvements, economic incentive packages, and targeted interventions for key areas of the Street.

Authors: Benoit Boucher, Lihua He, Michael Stott, David Wise, March 2003 (4.81 Mb)

Client: West Island Sustainability Research Group, McGill University

Geology of the West Island: Pride of Place - This paper explores the rich geological history of the West Island of Montreal, offering a full and detailed accounting of the geological strata of the Island, a discussion of geological history and an interpretation of the rock record. This paper forms the introduction and physical geography component of a comprehensive atlas of the West Island, currently in final editing.

Author: David Wise, January 2003 (1.3 Mb)

Client: School of Urban Planning - Studio I Report

The Pheonix Neighbourhood: A Revitalization Plan for the Faubourg St. Laurent - This proposal calls for a phased implementation of facade and streetscape improvements, linked with development of affordable housing units and a new Chinese Cultural Centre. The goal is to increase the supply of housing, develop greater sub-linkages between neighbouring areas, and enhance quality of life for area residents.

Authors: Lihua He, Manuela Sarnecki, David Wise, December 2002 (3.47 Mb)

Websites

Association of Canadian University Planning Programs
http://www.acupp-apucu.mcgill.ca

This is the homepage for the Association of Canadian University Planning programs. The challenge for this site was to come up with a clean and easy to use, fully bilingual interface with not a lot of extra features. A fun feature to liven things up is the flash city slideshow in the upper left corner. The site took approximately 30 hours to make, plus testing. Completed 2003.

McGill MILUTE Research Website
http://www.milute.mcgill.ca

This is the main research portal for the McGill Montreal Integrated Land Use Urban Transportation Econometrics Modelling project. I am one of the researchers for this, and put together this site in about 25 hours to serve as the primary gateway. The site is clean, professional and well organized. This is also the first I used templates with, to great effect. Completed 2003.

Montreal CMA Statistical Profile
http://www.milute.mcgill.ca/Research/Students/David_Wise/index.htm
This website was put together for a transportation planning class to create a snapshot of the Montreal CMA. The data used in this project is all from the 1996 census. I am planning on updating it with census 2001 data as soon as it becomes generally available. It should be an interesting comparison! This is the first website ever made using something other than notepad so it isn't as fancy as my latest sites. Completed 2002.

Graphics

Groupe Interuniversitaire de Montreal - An annual conference of Universities involved in research in the West Indies was held recently at McGill University. I was asked to design three 4' x 3' poster boards for McGill's submission. The boards were to be professional looking, but also to be creative and "different" from the usual style of boards. I created these from scratch using Adobe Photoshop 7. All elements are custom. The project took around 30 hours of continuous work until it was pronounced complete. Completed 2003.

Studio III: Revitalization of Sainte Catherine Street - Part of a studio research project involved the redesign of a significant portion of Ste. Catherine Street. The following images are exerpts from the full report. I made the images below for a presentation to a stakeholder to illustrate some of my ideas on what to do with a troublesome urban park on the street. Completed 2002.

Part of the same project, and the same park, but this time looking at the transit holding area that was creating a wide pedestrian-barrier to the rest of the commercial area. Completed 2002.

The next graphic is a sketch of the Faubourg Ste. Catherine marketplace drawn in to show curb extensions and textured crosswalks. It's a large drawing, on 11x17, and worked out well. Completed 2002.

The last graphic showing Guy Street and a conception for how to give a sense of arrival to this rather long and endless street. I'm still not sure how best to go about this intersection - perhaps an archway or a roundabout to signal arrival, but the local commercial groups are very worried about maintaining parking. Completed 2002.

Studio II: Residential Design - The task in Studio II was to design a complete infill on the former grounds of the Louis H. Lafontaine hospital in Montreal. We chose a medium density transportation oriented development with high pedestrian connectivity, narrow streets, and a balanced typology of housing. I drew this 1:200 scale image to give a more detailed view of the design plan for the main street. Completed March 2002.

Studio I: Revitalization of the Faubourg St. Laurent - This project involved developing a series of interventions for a low-income and troubled community immediately to the east of downtown Montreal. The project report can be found above. I drew this image for the presentation of our plan, to indicate suggested interventions. Completed November 2001.

Gutter Geography Map of the Faubourg St. Laurent - This is a spatial map of all physical indicators of drug use, sex, and marginal activity throughout the Faubourg St. Laurent, an inner-city neighbourhood to the east of downtown Montreal. I chose this method of analysis because I could not acquire GIS data of police calls at the desired level. The survey took some time to do, but displays very interesting patterns of activity that helped out Studio group focus interventions in the proper direction. Completed 2001.

Hotel de Ville Streetscape - A simple imaginary plan view of a streetscape I drew as part of my "Introduction to Graphics" course. Completed 2001.
